No Wonder it's #1
My wife and I had a great lunch here, in the pepper town of Espellete. At lunch, only the three course menu was available, but it was quite delicious. We both had the squid salad, which was fantastic. I then had the brandade, while my wife had the veal. While the brandade was good, I liked the veal better. We finished off with a nice chocolate dessert. All washed down with a local Basque white and this was a great meal. The chef came out and talked to us afterward and he was very nice. Go here instead of the tourist restaurants on the main street!

Even though we arrived late, the team arranged a way for us to eat. We've been treated to a delicious axoa. I've been spending half of the year in the Basque Country since I was born and I've rarely eaten one like that. Would definitely recommend + the team is super nice!

A gem in Basque Country
Wanting to experience the real basque country we booked a stay at Hotel du Chene and found it was really a fabulous restaurant with hotel rooms attached. We ate at this lovely country restaurant specialising in what was an outstanding delicious local basque meal. The service was friendly and attentive and the restaurant soon filled up with guests ,tourists and many locals . A very real experience in a lovely village which made our effort to visit all the worthwhile.

We stumbled across this delightful café/restaurant after traipsing in the rain in search of somewhere open for lunch and were so glad to come across it! This “Tarterie/ Salon de Thé” is a very cheerful place, quirkily decorated to the smallest details (the bill holders are small watering-cans). It offers a selections of tarts (or quiches), savoury and sweet, one more enticing than the other and all freshly made. The service was lovely too and we left the place all refreshed and chirpy. Definitely seek it out if you are passing through Cambo-les-Bains!

An Attractive and Accommodating Restaurant
We were looking for a light lunch, and, because we were in Espellette, went in search of roasted pepper soup. A helpful shopkeeper suggested we try Restaurant Euzkadi, which serves a traditional Basque cuisine. We were shown into a very tasteful hotel dining room, where it quickly became apparent that a light lunch was not the norm. Roasted pepper soup was not on the menu, but kudos to our waiter for adjusting to our desires and for introducing us to elzekaria, a traditional Basque vegetable soup, which we enjoyed with a bit of salad, an order of pate for the table, some bread and a good local white wine. Good restaurant, great waiter, and a perfect lunch for a group of overfed travelers!

Wide choice of "Buffet" starter and good choice for main courses , 15 euros.
Visiting this Basque village , famous for its air dried red chillies , to be seen and purchased all around the village were struggling to find food that whet the appetite in the local restaurants. Came across this place and found the menu board inviting. The staff were well up to their jobs and were attentive without being pushy , tables cleared and reset in a flash. The food = we chose to have the buffet/ plat option at 15 euros each , pichet at 5 euros. Good value help yourself buffet starters in a cold cabinet, well stocked and restocked quickly , main courses quickly brought and hot. Restaurant can fill up quickly as another local restaurant with gourmet meal was not doing too well - with its alternative high end meals / prices. The restaurant can be found in the main street. Parking in the village is at a premium , and may require a walk in from locally well signed car parks.

Fresh local produce
The flavours were so authentic and dishes carefully prepared. I loved the variety but I wasn't very daring. I loved the traditional Basque dishes. There was something for everyone - for the unadventurous, the traditional and the very adventurous diner had the option of locally farmed pigeon and rabbit. Service was excellent with great patience and pride shown in explaining in English the dishes and the origins of the produce used. The wines and drinks list was extensive. Lovely evening.

The Xurassco serves roasted meat or stockfish. The food was genuine but cooked without finesse, served the Portuguese way with french fries and rice. The portions are big, but the price is nearing that of a menu in a traidtional restaurant. Extremly unpleasant were the crude jokes of the French owner at the expense of his Portuguese wife who is doing the cooking.
