Excellent restaurant off the tourist track
My partner and I had dinner in this restaurant on 31st October during a weeks' holiday on the Costa Brava. We found it on Trip Advisor and decided to drive inland, away from the tourist traps, to find a better dining experience.Locating the place isn't easy, it's down a side street a hundred metres from the central town square. We were the first customers in on a Friday night at 8.00pm. The host cum chef made us feel most welcome, and gave us a very good impromptu English translation of each dish on his fixed dinner menu, which was excellent value at around 20 Euros per person for three courses including a bottle of wine and bread, plus a little tapas appetiser. The choice of food was excellent, as was the quality. I had a starter of black beans and local sausage in sauce, followed by a main course of wild boar stew. My partner had a spectacular anchovy and goat's cheese salad, followed by veal in a rich sauce. Following dessert, we had coffees and two of the largest glasses of liquer (including brandy for me) you have ever seen. The total bill, including two beers beforehand, came to 51.50 Euros. Fantastic welcome, fantastic food and drink, fantastic value, pleasant surroundings. All in all, an excellent experience.

Worth the journey
It's always a good sign when you pull into a restaurant car park and there are lots of cars there. Especially when it's situated in the middle of nowhere. We would never have known about it, had it not been for Trip Advisor, but we seemed to be the only people who found out about it that way. Everyone else seemed local, including a big table of about 20 Mossos d'Esquadra (the local police force) in full uniform. I always take this as a good sign of how good a place is.It's mostly Argentinian food, with a few local adjustments. A Choripan, which is supposed to be Argentinian Chorizo inside bread, had a Butifarra sausage instead, but was none the worse for that. Like most proper Argentinian restaurants, it had dishes like Pasta on the menu, but no Milanesa (escalopes) or Matambre (a rolled pork dish). The empanadas were delicious, and the croquettes the best we've tasted in a long time. But the high spot of the meal was the meat. Tira de Asado, Vacio and Entrana were on offer, the latter a huge piece of tender Skirt steak cooked to perfection. Now the amazing thing about this place is the price. All the above, plus dessert, many of which were home-made, were all part of a Menu del Dia at €18 (December 2014). There were a few extra charges (there were five flavours of ice creams included, but Dulce de Leche Ice Cream, which is compulsory in any visit to an Argentinian restaurant, was €2 extra. The Menu included a starter, main course and dessert, wine and coffee and represents extraordinary value for money when you consider the quality of the cooking.

Friendly service; delicious locally sourced food: a hidden delight
Ca la Maria is just visible from the main road between LLagostera and La Platja, but there is no indication from the outside just how nice it is. The restaurant is in a beautifully converted farmhouse- the main dining room has huge windows and backs on to a huge hen enclosure at head height. The cock pranced up and down and watched us eating. All the food is locally sourced and seasonal: there is a large vegetable garden and wild boar and rabbits in the woods above. The food was delicious- the wild boar carpaccio was stunning, as were the Palamos prawns and the rabbit. Desserts were beautifully presented and scrumptious. We went a la carte but the 50 euro 5 course menu looked good value. The proprietor, la Maria, was freindly and attentive.

What a fantastic find
We stopped in Llagostera looking for somewhere for a dink and a meal. We looked at the restaurants near the main square and then walked on and found Can Cassoles, which is a bit out of the town centre (but it is a very small town). Although it looks quite unprepossessing, the food they served was absolutely excellent. Once we ordered we were served with a small taster of chilled pea soup, along with rustic bread and olive oil. The quality of the main courses was excellent we we had a very good bottle of Rioja for €6.10. Because Llagostera is a bit out of the way, it provides really good value for money and is well worth a small detour. Also, they do not speak very much English, so have your phrase book handy!

On our trip while passing through Llagostera we stopped at a lovely, well presented cafeteria and sat in a charming garden lounge area. We chose to go with simple chicken burger meal and patatas bravas from the menu and we were positively surprised with beautifully presented, full of flavour burgers nestled on a bed of cheese&carmelised onion that were just melting in our mouths, in a lightly toasted bun. Patatas bravas came with delicious home made sauces. Truly authentic Catalan cooking, best we had so far! Staff were extremely friendly even tho they were super busy. We will definitely stop here next time. Highly recommended to the travelers and the locals!
