Top 10 Things to do in Honduras, Honduras

Laid-back, low-profile Honduras is one of Central America's largely unknown tourist destinations. A recent proliferation of domestic flights has opened up the Bay Islands and the major cities of La Ceiba, Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Buses, taxis and dug-out canoes provide other transport options. The Maya city of Copan is a UNESCO-designated heritage site with a ball court, an Acropolis and a Hieroglyphic Stairway. Other sights include El Cusuco National Cloud Forest Park, home to quetzal birds.

West Bay Beach

West Bay is what many consider the picture-perfect Caribbean destination: white sand, clear, calm waters and full service resorts. The variety of water activities include scuba diving, fishing charters, snorkeling and parasailing. Scuba diving and other outfitters leave directly from the beach so starting your water-based activities is easy and convenient.

Be careful when snorkelling - the coral is jagged

Great snorkeling in the corner by the rocks but the coral is jagged and you can scratch yourself in shallow waters. There are two resorts with public bathrooms and kind security guards who direct you to them if you look desperate for the toilet.

Went to Roatan on NCL Breakaway and was there one day. Had contacted RIMS 2 months prior regarding the Dolphin experiences. Made the arrangements and received emails, etc. A couple of days before arriving they did move up start time, but was okay. Interacting with and swimming with Mr French and Ronnie was amazing. The dolphins are magnificent and so smart. Henry, the trainer was in water with us and gave instructions and information and was very helpful. All of the staff were friendly and helpful. Was a wonderful day and highly recommend RIMS and St Anthony's Dolphin encounter.

What to do and see in La Ceiba, Atlantida Department: The Best Places and Tips

La Ceiba (Spanish pronunciation: [la ˈseiβa]) is a port city on the northern coast of Honduras in Central America. It is located on the southern edge of the Caribbean, forming part of the south eastern boundary of the Gulf of Honduras. With an estimated population of over 200,000 living in approximately 170 residential areas (called colonias or barrios), it is the third largest city in the country and the capital of the Honduran department of Atlántida. La Ceiba was officially founded on 23 August 1877. The city was named after a giant ceiba tree which grew near the old dock. The dock itself finally fell into the sea in late 2007. The city has been officially proclaimed the "Eco-Tourism Capital of Honduras" as well as the "Entertainment Capital of Honduras". Every year, on the third or fourth Saturday of May, the city holds its famous carnival to commemorate Isidore the Laborer (Spanish San Isidro Labrador). During this time, the city is host to approximately 500,000 tourists.
