Expensive, but the best for a special occasion

Business dinner. The crab appetizer was fabulous, as was the halibut. Oysters were fresh and delicious. The seafood grill was great, but left me wanting more. Highlands is simply the best dining experience in Birmingham. When it's time to splurge, go to Highlands. You won't be disappointed.

Chez FON FON

Wonderful experience- well worth the visit

Mom wanted to eat at Chez Fon Fon for her 97th birthday. Their policy of No reservations made it easy to go on a day she felt well. We parked in a lot just a half block away for $5- parking would have been a challenge on the street as all spaces were taken. It was sunny and easy enough to roll her wheelchair there. We were seated immediately and were offered water. Our waiter, Brent was excellent. He took care of Mom. The iced tea was good and not sweetened - yeah! The coffee was too strong a taste for mom and she thought it bitter. As an appetizer we had the fish paillard - tuna with a sweet spicy sauce. It was excellent. Just the right taste. Mom had the crab cake. It was good but the crab flavor did not shine - as a Marylander, I expect more crab flavor and not much filling. It was big but ... The mushroom and peas could have been warmer but they were fine. The veal and lamb dishes were excellent. Tender and flavorful. Both had small potatoes and asparagus accompaniments. Desserts were fabulous. The coconut cake was moist and very coconut flavored with toasted coconut on top. Mom even ordered a piece to take home. We thought we tasted banana in it just a little! The berry truffle was perfect with great custard. The chocolate nut tart was very sweet with a taste of praline - not our favorite. The coconut cake was the best with a sauce that made it even better. Very enjoyable dinner in a friendly environment. I hope to go again next time in the area.

Consistently Good Any Time of Day!

Third time eating at Jim 'N Nick's, and the third location. Once an early dinner, once a very late lunch, and once an early lunch. Regardless of the location or the time, the bar-b-q is moist and tasty, and the service friendly and fast. I've eaten at BBQ chains, and it seems like once they get past the original they go downhill. Not Jim 'N Nick's - they have are consistently good regardless of the location, or the time. Looking forward to visiting the one in Atlanta soon!

Excellent food and service

This was our first time to try Hot & Hot Fish Club. Excellent experience in every facet of the dining experience. Our server, Paul, was professional, great personality, gave good recommendations, really added to our dining enjoyment. I really liked the ambiance, welcoming and total class. Enjoyed being able to see the open kitchen. It was interesting to watch as each dish came out, it was inspected to be certain it was correct. The service was excellent, they served to the left and removed from the right, kudos! Fairly rare to see that these days. The service was very smooth. The bread was great, good texture, very tasty. We both ordered the stuffed quail for appetizer, creative and SO good. He chose pork 3 ways which was perfectly prepared. I chose scallops, WOW, delicious, perfectly seared on the outside and creamy on the inside. Tables are far enough apart to have some privacy. Noise level was minimal, one could easily converse and be heard. They have valet parking though we didn't use it. We were staying at a nearby hotel and used Uber. I highly recommend this restaurant. When back in Birmingham we will be returning. Thanks to Paul for helping make our dining experience a lot of fun as well as memorable. Kudos to the kitchen, you hit the ball out of the park.

This is the second Ruth’s Cris I have been to, and is no less exceptional than the first. An amazing steak, perfectly prepared and served sizzling hot (literally) and perfectly seasoned. Creamed spinach was amazing, the bread crisp outside and warm and soft inside, the wine exquisite, and the desert to die for. The server - Lionel - was the epitome of professionalism and courtesy. If you have never been to a top shelf steakhouse - or even in you think you have - you need to come here.I'm thrilled to know that you've always had a great experience at Ruth's Chris! It's wonderful hearing that your meal was top notch and that the service you received from Lionel made such a great impression. Superb!

Not sure about negative reviews but we had a great experience. First, you need reservations. We had reservations on a Monday night and it was packed. I ordered a pistachio crusted snapped and substituted risotto for the bed it was on instead of white beans and cabbage. It was excellent. All 4 of us ordered different things and each person was delighted with their seleciton. Wine prices comparable to anywhere else. Service was spot on. Attentive and welcoming. It is a small place and crowded but great ambiance and great food!

Pancakes in all their glory

Not only pancakes but eggs, waffles, bacon....name a breakfast food...Original House of Pancakes has it. (While I’m going to refer to it as OHOP, DON’T be mislead. It’s called “Original House Of Pancakes” thank you very much!)Come hungry? If you leave hungry it’s your own fault. Seriously, my husband and I split breakfast and still couldn’t eat it all. We shared a bacon and cheese omelette. I can’t even guess how many eggs were in our omelette-it was the size of a sautée pan just folded in half. It was also nearly two inches tall. Stuffed with bacon (or your choice of other breakfast meat) and tons of melty cheddar (or whatever your choice of cheese), our omelette was cooked to perfection. It also came with three buttermilk pancakes (or your choice of numerous other pancake flavors/styles/toppings). You seeing a pattern here? Choices is what sets OHOP apart from other breakfast joints.OHOP is only open for breakfast and lunch. I did see a brief lunch menu but why bother? You don’t go to a pancake house to have lunch. No wait for a table this early February Wednesday morning but you better be prepared to wait on the weekend. Don’t worry though-you’ll be rewarded tenfold with a belly full of deliciousness! There was only one disappointment-they we’re out of gluten free batter. Maybe next time I can share in those cakes!

Fresh Food, Urban Experience

Urban Cookhouse in downtown Birmingham is a good place to sit for a sandwich and tea or lemonade. The menu is consistent as with the other UC’s. Although it is a chain, I think the food is consistently fresh, appetizing, and delicious for a sandwich shop. The restaurant was very clean and efficient. I really enjoyed my grilled chicken sandwich with broccoli salad. Their special drink is strawberry lemonade which is awesome!
