Great pub and food

Staying in the village with friends, called for evening meal. Very friendly staff and lovely atmosphere in the whole pub.We ordered chicken and leek pie, fish and chips, chicken/chorizo pasta and chicken and Stilton pasta bake. All meals were delicious. Puddings of chocolate brownie, apple crumble and sticky toffee puddings were also enjoyed.Intend to return this evening before we depart for home in the morning.

Nice view, food so-so

There is a great view from the services, and a decent upmarket shop. However, the macaroni cheese was cool, poorly seasoned, and came with most peculiar salads, decidedly bland. The cheese toastie was improvement, but not much.It isn't bargain basement, either, tea with the macaroni cheese and sides coming to nearly £12.

Awesome place

Can't recommend this place enough. It's a hotel and restaurant at the services and you would never know. Everything about this place is good. Food is amazing from breakfast to the dinners. Suggests everyone spend a night if they are planning a long drive. I have stayed here three times once due to bad weather and they are always welcoming and helpful.

Unexpected stop and surprise

Due to traffic on way to Scotland unexpectedly ended up stopping the night in Tebay. Recommended here by B&B and very pleased we were. Halloween party on when we arrived, but team and service with a smile, excellent, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Missed out on the lamb as sold out but beef stew and proper dumplings amazing !! As was sticky toffee pudding.Very very good traditional food well served and beer also well kept. If you get the chance give it ago.

Charming but only for those stopping at the B&B!

The people who run this B&B obviously reserve their charm for customers for the B&B - woebetide anyone popping in for a sandwich or cup of tea and doesn't stop to spend enough money. A group of 9 of us walking the 20 miles from Shap to Kirkby Stephen stopped en-route as one of our group had forgotten their sandwiches and this was the only place for miles. Firstly when ordering the sandwich he was asked if that was 'all' that he was ordering and if we didnt want teas and coffees etc. Then some of us used the toilet and sat round waiting for the sandwich to be made and also waited for a friend to sort out the plasters on their feet. As requested by the owner some of us that had used the toilet to put a donation in the charity tin - which we did. We were just about to leave when the other owner came out and shouted at us for 5 minutes giving us some 'feedback' on how awful we were for using the toilet, sitting round in their driveway and basically not purchasing enough goods. I appreciate it must have been annoying us using the toilet - but if you don't want people to use it don't advertise it on your signs or ask people to pay (I quite happily have would and I did donate to the charity tin). So here's my feedback - for those walking the 20 miles from Shap to Kirkby - you are too early in the day for people to stop for teas and coffees - and you know what - if I'd met anyone coming the other way I'd have told them not to bother due to rudeness and anger we encoutered.

Small, but perfectly cooked!

The lunchtime special includes small fish and small chips. The portion of chips was more than enough but the fish, though delicious, was disproportionately small in my view. Something to consider when ordering. At the end of my meal I rather expected to be offered the dessert menu, but the closed sign had gone up and I was given the bill even though I’d not asked for it.Service was very prompt, and this is still one of the best fish and chip shops around mind.

Incredible meal

We stayed at the Black Swan and dined there that evening. The meal was amazing, very well prepared, beautifully presented and divine to dine on. We both really enjoyed what we had. The service was very good as well. The only down side, was I felt that the dining room was crowded, my chair was bumped by wait staff at least 3 may be 4 times during the evening, and I was sitting close to the table. Great meal, great service.
